Eastern Iowa Professional Engineers Wanted for Fall Semester, 2008

for
The University of Iowa, Civil & Environmental Engineering Department

Pilot Program for Expanding Connections Between Professional Practice and Education

Up to six Eastern Iowa professional engineers are invited to participate in an interactive design course focused on appropriate technologies for communities in developing countries.  The course, Design for the Developing World, will be offered in the Fall of 2008 and will be facilitated by Dr. Craig Just.  The class meets on Mondays and Wednesdays from 4:30 – 5:45 p.m. and will consist of up to six student design teams involved in the design and rapid prototyping of technologies such as solar cooking ovens, slow-sand water filters, footbridges, refugee shelters, and community-scale drinking water and irrigation systems.

Professional engineers will preferably be “embedded” in design teams, attend as many class sessions as feasible and work with students on all aspects of the “flagship” design projects that will be completed during the course of the semester.  Professional engineers are also encouraged to make arrangements for their team to tour and/or complete certain design tasks using resources at their firm (e.g. CAD, colleagues, etc.) to further enhance connections between practice and education.
