Information for Prospective Graduate Students

The graduate program in Civil and Environmental Engineering is one of the largest programs at the University of Iowa. Over the last five years (2003-2008), the program has graduated the most doctoral students in the College of Engineering and the fourth largest number of doctoral students in the University of Iowa. The masters program is also among the largest in the college of engineering.  Currently, the department supports 48 doctoral students and 35 masters students.  Most receive full financial aid through research assistantships, teaching assistantships, and fellowships. Full financial aid in includes stipends (starting at $22,000 per year), tuition support (more than 50%), and health benefits.  All students with assistantships and full fellowships are eligible for Iowa Resident tuition rates. Find out more from the College of Engineering.

About half the current doctoral students in CEE enter with a masters degree completed.  The other half include students who complete a masters degree in our program and students who are admitted directly to the doctoral program. For all students completing the Ph.D. in CEE between 2003 and 2008, the average time to degree is 5.0 years.  This is less than theaverage time for all math, physical science, and engineering doctorates at the University of Iowa (5.4 years)

B.S./M.S. Program in Civil & Environmental Engineering

The B.S./M.S. Program in CEE is designed to attract the most able undergraduate students to the graduate program in Civil and Environmental Engineering at The University of Iowa.

Students admitted into the B.S./M.S degree program can apply four undergraduate courses towards a graduate degree.  Once admitted, these students must enroll and participate in a graduate seminar course and may begin to work on Master's thesis or project research with a CEE faculty member.

Admission into the fast-track program is based on the student’s academic record.  To apply to the fast-track combined degree program, a student must identify a faculty adviser.  The advisor should guide the student during the second semester of the senior year, and until the completion of the M.S. degree.
